The Betel Nut (Areca Catechu) is a
fruit from a tree, commonly sliced thin and eaten with betel leaves (paan).
TYPES:
There are two main types:
one is conical and elongated, known
as "Jahazi Chhalia" (Ship Betel Nut), while the other is round,
called "Manik Chandi."
ARECOLINE:
If a betel nut has more white streaks inside
when cut, it is considered of better quality. It contains an alkaloid called
"Arecoline," which is effective against intestinal worms.
COLOUR:
The outer color is brown.
TASTE:
Taste is somewhat like banana.
TEMPERAMENT:
Its temperament is cold and dry in the second
degree.
ANOUNT OF FOOD:
The dosage is between 3 to 5 "masha"
(traditional unit of weight).
BIRTH PLACE:
It is primarily found in the warmer
regions of India, particularly in South India, Mysore, Canara, Malabar, and
Assam.
Functions and Uses:
- It is an astringent, anti-inflammatory, and helps to
dissolve swelling.
- Sliced thin, it is consumed with betel leaves.
- Its powder is used to stop diarrhoea.
- It strengthens the teeth, which is why it's often burnt
and included in toothpowders.
- Its paste is applied to hot swellings.
- The famous compound "Majoon Supaari Paak" is
made from it, which is highly beneficial for uterine discharge
(leucorrhoea).
